A short tour of software and platforms I genuinely like using. Not a sponsored list. Just tools that earn their place in my day job, home lab, and side projects (including this site).
This site is a modern web stack kept intentionally lean:
That combination is fast to iterate on, easy to deploy, and pleasant to maintain when you want a personal site that still behaves like a real product.
Cloudflare is one of those companies that quietly makes the internet better. At the core they sit in front of websites and apps as a global network: DNS, CDN caching, DDoS protection, TLS, bot management, and a growing set of developer platform features (Workers, tunnels, Zero Trust access, R2 storage, and more).
What I love is the practicality. You can put a domain behind Cloudflare and immediately get performance and security posture that used to take a rack of kit and a specialist team. For labs and side projects, Cloudflare Tunnel is especially good: expose a home service without opening inbound ports like it is 2012. For work, their edge network and Zero Trust story are hard to ignore.
Home automation is one of my favourite hobbies, and Home Assistant is the brain of it. Local-first where it can be, obsessively integrable, and flexible enough to tie lights, sensors, presence, media, energy, and odd IoT devices into one coherent place.
The joy is not just flipping switches from a phone. It is building automations that make a house feel thoughtful: fewer manual chores, better visibility, and a playground for curious engineers who like systems that respond to real life.
A good password manager is non-negotiable. Bitwarden hits the sweet spot for me: strong open-source roots, solid cross-device apps, sharing that actually works for families and small teams, and the option to self-host if you want that control. Unique passwords everywhere, MFA where it matters, and far less "I reused that one from 2018" energy.
Tools change. Taste sticks. These are the ones that currently make my work, lab, and home feel sharper.
