Baby room checklist and buy list
Nathan Chadwick · · 2 min read
TLDRRead the short version
- Fit the room first: cot, mattress, blackout, changing space, storage, and a bin. Everything else hangs off that.
- Buy now: sleep kit, changing kit, first clothes, and safety basics. Delay gadgets, extra toys, and duplicate gear.
- Keep the room calm, cool, and clutter-light. If it does not help sleep, change, or settle, it can wait.

Short reference list for setting up the baby room. Buy the room kit first, then fill gaps as you go.
Room first#
Get the space usable before you fill drawers.
- Cot or crib that meets current UK safety standards, plus a firm, correctly fitted mattress
- Fitted cot sheets (at least 2–3) and a cellular blanket or approved sleep bag later
- Blackout blinds or curtains
- Changing table or a solid surface with a wipeable mat
- Chest of drawers / storage for clothes and nappies
- Soft lighting (lamp or dimmable main light) for night changes
- Nappy bin with a lid
- Basket or caddy for daily changing kit so you are not hunting at 3am
Buy list#
Sleep#
- Moses basket or bedside crib for the early weeks if you want one (optional; cot alone is fine)
- Room thermometer
- White noise machine or a simple fan for steady background sound
- Baby monitor (audio is enough to start; video later if you want it)
Changing and clothes#
- Nappies (newborn size, not a warehouse of them — they grow out fast)
- Wipes and cotton wool / boiled cooled water for the first weeks if you prefer
- Barrier cream
- Muslin cloths (buy more than you think)
- Bodysuits, sleepsuits, hats, and socks in newborn and 0–3 months
- Swaddle or transitional swaddle if you use one
- Soft towels and a baby bath or bath support
Safety and settle#
- Baby gate only if stairs or unsafe rooms need one before crawling
- Socket covers / cord tidy if sockets or blinds need it
- First-aid kit with digital thermometer
- Soft play mat for tummy time once they are ready
Do later#
Leave these until you know you need them.
- Extra furniture, matching décor sets, and “nursery gadget” bundles
- Big toy hauls and activity centres
- Duplicate changing stations in every room
- Fancy humidifiers, projectors, and anything sold as essential that you can live without for a month
Quick room check#
Before you call it done:
- Cot clear: no pillows, loose blankets, bumpers, or soft toys in the sleep space
- Mattress firm and flush to the cot sides
- Room roughly 16–20°C, smoke alarm working nearby
- Changing kit stocked within arm’s reach
- Dirty-clothes basket and spare sheets ready
That is enough to use the room on day one. Add the rest when real life tells you what is missing.
A quiet signal if this helped. No account needed.
